Local Information

Great Suffolk Yard is located within a short walk of Borough Underground and three of London’s major transport hubs – London Bridge, London Waterloo and Blackfriars, so it’s really easy to get to. Approximate walking and tube times are given below under Transport Links.

We’ve also provided suggested walking routes to key landmarks such as The Tate Modern, The Shard, Shakespeare’s Globe and Borough Market, as these are so close to our new office. Directions can be viewed here.

Markets

Borough Market – 12 min walk
London’s most renowned food market, with a wide choice of food and drink options.

Bars and pubs

The George Inn – 10 min walk
The only surviving galleried London coaching inn, established in the 17th century.

Flat Iron Square – 8 min walk
Food and drink destination under the railway arches, with various food traders, taproom and brewery, beer garden, and weekly DJs.

The Rake – 13 min walk
Tiny pub behind Borough Market with a massive beer selection. A pioneer of the craft beer scene.

Sky Garden – 23 min walk
This bar/ restaurant/ garden in the sky is absolutely beautiful. Perfect for after-work drinks with a view. Free tickets to the gardens are available, released every Monday – which if you go on a nice quiet day, is actually very relaxing. In addition to the gardens, there are several restaurants and bars to try. Darwin Brasserie is my favourite, specialising in English cuisine, and if you book early enough, you can request for a window seat to get the best view.

History

Southwark first appears in written English in the tenth century, when the Anglo-Saxons document the name ‘Suthriganaweorc’ and it’s mentioned in the Domesday Book as ‘Sudweca’. This is very old English for ‘work in the south’, which is how it became modernised to Southwark. The correct way to pronounce it is ‘suth-erk’, meaning the ‘w’ is silent and you can ignore the ‘o’. Southwark is situated on the south bank of the River Thames, forming the north-western part of the London Borough of Southwark and is the oldest district of South London.

Southwark village, in the borough’s northern section, has been important as a junction of roads and as a commanding point on the approach to London since AD43, when the Romans constructed a bridge there across the Thames. By the 12th century, Southwark had been incorporated as an ancient borough, hence its alternate name of Borough. From the 15th century on, Southwark was known as a great market town (Borough Market still exists today and is one of the largest and oldest food markets in London), with many inns, theatres, spas, country resorts, and other places of entertainment and recreation in the area.
